South America. Northern South America east of the Andes and south to Paraguay but excluding eastern Brazil. The species is said to be patchily distributed over this range.

Not especially frequent in European collections. Given the species' natural range, it needs protection in the winter and is unlikely to survive long in the wild in Britian. The NBN atlas shows an intriguing cluster in the vicinity of Cheshire and in south Wales.
