South America. The Andes from Peru to Tierra del Fuego and northwards to Uruguay and Brazil. Also Falklands and S. Georgia.

Recorded in Derbyshire, Northumberland, Shropshire, Lincolnshire and Hampshire and probably many other counties. Has bred, the last confirmed occasion being in Hampshire in 2011.
